The United States has strongly condemned the deadly attack on communities in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, Nigeria, as conflicting casualty figures continue to emerge from the incident, deepening national and international outrage.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the US Embassy in Nigeria described the attack as “senseless and tragic”, expressing condolences to the families of victims and solidarity with affected communities. Washington also urged Nigerian authorities to swiftly investigate the violence and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
“Violence against civilians is unacceptable under any circumstances,” the statement said, reaffirming America’s support for Nigeria’s efforts to improve security and protect vulnerable populations.
Local sources reported that armed assailants stormed several villages in Kaiama, killing residents and forcing others to flee their homes. However, officials have yet to provide a definitive death toll, with reports ranging from dozens to significantly higher figures, underscoring the uncertainty surrounding the scale of the attack.
Kwara State authorities confirmed the incident but said security agencies were still assessing the situation on the ground. Emergency responders have been deployed to assist survivors, while security forces have launched operations to track down the perpetrators.
The attack has reignited concerns over rural insecurity in Nigeria, where communities across several states have faced repeated assaults by armed groups, often with devastating humanitarian consequences.
Human rights advocates and civil society organisations have called on the federal government to strengthen security measures and prioritise the protection of civilians, warning that continued violence risks further destabilising already vulnerable regions.
As investigations continue, residents of Kaiama remain on edge, with many demanding urgent action to prevent further attacks and restore peace to their communities.
