The United Nations has strongly condemned the killing of residents in Nigeria’s Kwara State, describing the attack as “deeply disturbing” and calling on authorities to swiftly investigate the incident and hold those responsible accountable.
In a statement on Thursday, a UN spokesperson expressed sympathy for the families of the victims and reiterated the organisation’s commitment to supporting Nigeria in protecting civilians and strengthening security across vulnerable communities.
“The United Nations condemns this senseless violence in the strongest terms and extends its condolences to the victims’ families,” the statement said, urging the government to ensure justice for those affected.
Local officials confirmed that several people were killed when armed assailants attacked a community in the state, sparking fresh concerns over the growing insecurity in parts of north-central Nigeria. Security agencies have since been deployed to the area, while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the attack are ongoing.
Kwara State authorities said they are working closely with federal security forces to restore calm and prevent further violence. Community leaders have also appealed for peace, calling on residents to cooperate with law enforcement.
The latest incident adds to a series of deadly attacks across Nigeria in recent months, highlighting persistent challenges posed by armed groups and criminal gangs. Human rights organisations have repeatedly urged the government to intensify efforts to protect civilians and address the root causes of violence, including poverty and weak local security structures.
The UN reaffirmed its readiness to assist Nigeria in promoting peace, accountability and long-term stability.
