In a dramatic escalation of Middle East tensions on Saturday, U.S. and Israeli military forces reportedly carried out strikes on the Iranian port city of Bushehr, home to the country’s only operational nuclear power plant, a facility built and maintained with Russian support.

State-affiliated Iranian media reported explosions in Bushehr early in the attack, but it remained unclear whether the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant was damaged as warplanes and missiles pierced airspace across several major Iranian cities, including Tehran, Isfahan, Qom and Karaj.

The Bushehr facility — constructed with Russian expertise, fuelled by Russian nuclear material and staffed in part by Russian technicians — has long stood as a symbol of Tehran’s civilian nuclear capability. Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom said it had evacuated non‑essential personnel and the children of staff members from Iran in recent hours, but key Russian operators remain in place to monitor reactor safety.

From Washington and Jerusalem, military sources described the operation as part of a broader offensive against what they termed Iran’s escalating nuclear and missile programs. Israel’s defence establishment said the strikes were coordinated with U.S. forces and were “pre‑emptive” in nature, though detailed damage assessments have not been released.

Moscow condemned the joint strikes, labelling the attack an “unprovoked act of armed aggression,” and warned that targeting nuclear facilities could provoke unpredictable humanitarian and radiological consequences. Russia’s foreign ministry called on all parties to return to diplomacy and international law.

Iran’s government denounced the strikes and vowed a “decisive response,” urging the United Nations Security Council to address what it called a violation of international peace and security. Tehran has been engaged in intermittent nuclear diplomacy in recent months but had resisted linking its enrichment and missile programs to potential diplomatic concessions.

The strikes significantly raise concerns among global security analysts and nuclear experts. Should a nuclear power station like Bushehr be directly hit, the consequences could include severe radioactive contamination and widespread environmental impact — a scenario that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has previously warned against.

This development marks the most intense direct confrontation in the years‑long standoff over Iran’s nuclear program and carries profound implications for regional stability, global energy markets, and the prospects for renewed diplomatic engagement.
