Nigeria has continued to pour out tributes following the passing of prominent Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, with top government officials describing his death as a painful blow to the country’s religious and moral landscape.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, said the news of the cleric’s death left him deeply saddened. In a statement issued by his spokesman, Alkasim Abdulkadir, the minister described the late scholar as “a man of character and quiet service,” noting that his influence stretched across Nigeria and beyond.
According to the statement, Tuggar aligned himself with the grief of the cleric’s family, students, and the global Tijaniyya community, saying the late scholar spent his life promoting peace, knowledge, and devotion to God. Abdulkadir added that the minister viewed Sheikh Bauchi’s teachings as part of the moral foundation on which many Nigerians were raised.
He said, “The minister extends his heartfelt condolences to the immediate family, the people of Bauchi State, and all those touched by his passing,” stressing that the revered scholar lived a life marked by faith, humility, and service.
Tuggar prayed that Allah forgive the cleric’s shortcomings and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus, while also asking God to give his students and followers the strength to bear the loss.
In a separate statement, the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, also expressed sorrow over the cleric’s passing. Through his media aide, Ismail Mudashir, the senator noted that the death of Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi “creates a huge vacuum that will be difficult to fill,” describing him as a leading light of Islamic scholarship whose teachings shaped countless lives.
Barau said the late scholar stood out for his dedication to the Qur’an, his leadership in the Tijaniyya movement, and his commitment to establishing Qur’anic schools and humanitarian outreach across different communities. He stated that millions drew inspiration from his message of devotion, discipline, and righteous living.
The Deputy Senate President added, “I mourn the passing of our renowned Islamic scholar and leader, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, a great icon of Islamic scholarship whose light shone on millions of Muslims across Nigeria and beyond.”
Barau, who also serves as the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, extended condolences to the cleric’s family, the Muslim Ummah, and every individual touched by the late scholar’s teachings. He prayed that Allah grant him the highest rank in Jannatul Firdaus.
Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, widely regarded as one of the most influential Islamic scholars in West Africa, leaves behind a legacy marked by decades of teaching, spiritual guidance, and community service.
