Several women have been injured after a bus conveying supporters to welcome President Bola Tinubu collided with a security vehicle in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
A bus carrying women mobilised to welcome President Bola Tinubu has been involved in a serious road accident in Uyo, leaving several people injured and at least one person reportedly dead.
The accident occurred on Friday along Oron Road when the Akwa Ibom State Transport Corporation (AKTC) bus collided with a security Hilux vehicle.
The women were reportedly travelling towards the airport to join supporters welcoming the President, who was visiting the state for the inauguration of government projects and an All Progressives Congress (APC) rally.
Both vehicles sustained significant damage in the collision, while emergency responders and other road users were seen attempting to rescue those trapped in the wreckage.
According to reports, the injured victims were rushed to nearby hospitals for medical attention.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that it had dispatched a response team to the scene. However, its Public Relations Officer for Road Safety Operations in Akwa Ibom, Paul James, said the command was yet to establish the full extent of the casualties and the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The Guardian subsequently reported that one person had died, with several others sustaining injuries. However, the casualty figures had not been fully confirmed by the FRSC at the time of reporting.
The incident cast a shadow over the President’s visit, which attracted political leaders, government officials and supporters from across the state.
Tinubu arrived in Uyo alongside his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and was received by Governor Umo Eno and other dignitaries.
His engagements in the state included the inauguration of major infrastructure projects, including facilities at Victor Attah International Airport, before attending an APC political rally.
Authorities are yet to establish the precise circumstances that led to the collision.
