Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has approved 68 billion naira in funding to support the Maiduguri Power Plant, in a move aimed at stabilising electricity supply in the region.

According to details of the approval, the funds will be disbursed through a monthly intervention of 2 billion naira, spanning from March 2026 to December 2028. The financing is intended to close an existing funding gap affecting the plant’s operations.

The 50-megawatt Maiduguri Power Plant, commissioned in 2023, has faced operational challenges linked to funding constraints, limiting its ability to deliver consistent power.

Officials say the intervention is expected to strengthen the plant’s capacity and improve electricity supply to Maiduguri and surrounding areas, where reliable power remains a persistent challenge.

There has been no immediate indication of additional reforms or measures tied to the funding approval.
