Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Adams Oshiomhole, has thrown his weight behind President Bola Tinubu’s tax policy, describing it as progressive, inclusive and essential for Nigeria’s economic stability.
Oshiomhole, who represents Edo North Senatorial District, said the administration’s tax reforms are designed to correct long-standing structural imbalances in the economy by ensuring that those with greater capacity contribute more, while protecting low-income earners and small businesses.
Speaking on the policy direction of the Tinubu government, the former Edo State governor argued that Nigeria can no longer rely on borrowing and oil revenues to fund development, stressing that an efficient and equitable tax system is critical to national growth.
According to him, the reforms are aimed at broadening the tax base rather than increasing hardship, noting that improved tax compliance and transparency will enable government to invest more in infrastructure, healthcare, education and social welfare.
Oshiomhole dismissed criticisms that the tax measures are anti-poor, insisting that the policy reflects global best practices and aligns with the administration’s Renewed Hope agenda to rebuild the economy on a sustainable footing.
He added that the success of the tax reforms would depend on accountability in governance, urging authorities to ensure that tax revenues are judiciously utilised to deliver tangible benefits to Nigerians.
President Tinubu’s tax policy has continued to generate debate across the country, with supporters arguing that it is a necessary step to stabilise public finances, while critics warn of potential short-term pressure on households and businesses.
