ABUJA — President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja on Thursday for Makkah, Saudi Arabia, to perform Umrah and pray for Nigeria’s peace, unity, stability and progress.

During the pilgrimage, the President is expected to seek Allah’s guidance and blessings for the country and its people.

Before leaving, Tinubu will commission newly acquired Nigerian Air Force equipment at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. He is expected to return to Nigeria next week.

Umrah, often described as the minor pilgrimage, is a significant act of worship in Islam. It involves rites including circling the Kaaba in Makkah and walking between the hills of Safa and Marwah. Many Muslims undertake the pilgrimage as an expression of devotion and to seek spiritual renewal.

Unlike Hajj, which is performed during designated dates each year, Umrah can be undertaken at different times of the year, subject to Saudi regulations. There is no fixed number of times a Muslim is expected to perform it; some do so repeatedly, while others may undertake it once or not at all, depending on their means and circumstances. Hajj, by contrast, is an obligation once in a lifetime for Muslims who are physically and financially able.
