Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has dismissed Saidu Mohammed as the chief executive officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, in a swift leadership overhaul of the country’s oil regulatory body.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said the president has also nominated Rabiu Abdullahi Umar as Mohammed’s replacement.

No official reason was immediately given for the removal, which comes amid ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, a critical pillar of the country’s economy.

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority plays a central role in overseeing operations in the midstream and downstream segments of the petroleum industry, including licensing, compliance, and market regulation.

The appointment of Umar is expected to take effect following due process, as the administration continues efforts to reposition the sector under its broader economic agenda.
