Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State has ordered all secondary schools, both public and private, to immediately send their boarding students home following escalating security concerns across the country.
The directive was conveyed in a statement signed by the State Commissioner for Education, Dr Augustina Godwin.
According to the statement, the worsening national security situation has placed boarding students in public and private secondary schools at heightened risk of attacks by bandits. It cited the recent abductions of students in Kebbi and Niger states as stark examples of the threat.
Dr Godwin noted that, in view of the prevailing circumstances, Governor Kefas has mandated that all secondary schools operate strictly as day schools for the time being. Principals and school proprietors have been instructed to commence the immediate deboarding of all pupils.
She stressed that the decision is a precautionary measure aimed at protecting students’ lives and preventing potential security breaches amid the growing unrest.
The Taraba government has reassured parents of its commitment to restoring stability and pledged to work closely with security agencies to tackle the situation. School administrators have also been urged to comply fully with the directive and strengthen security arrangements on their premises.
