—Says non-kinetic engagements complement military operations to foster national unity.
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has identified sports as a vital non-kinetic instrument for national security, international diplomacy, and the strengthening of Nigerian unity.
Speaking on Sunday at the closing ceremony of the International Open Archery Championship in Abuja, the Army Chief noted that sports do more than promote physical fitness; they serve as a platform for building discipline and mutual understanding across diverse populations.
According to Gen. Shaibu, such engagements are essential to the Nigerian Army’s broader strategy, as they complement kinetic military operations by improving civil-military relations and fostering social stability.
“Sports transcend physical fitness and recreation; they are an instrument for building trust and fostering mutual understanding,” the COAS stated at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre and Suites. “These engagements strengthen our ties with the public and contribute to a holistic approach to national security.”
The Army Chief commended the athletes for their discipline and sportsmanship, noting that the championship provided a unique opportunity for talent development and cultural exchange. He reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote healthy competition and public trust.
The championship, organized by the Nigerian Archery Federation, featured participants from across Africa and other continents.
In his remarks, the President of the Federation, Alhaji Mohammed Baba, thanked the COAS for the Army’s support and for providing a world-class venue. He noted that such partnerships are crucial for the growth of archery in Nigeria and for fostering international sporting cooperation.
