The Senate has confirmed the appointment of six new commissioners for the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) — the agency responsible for determining and monitoring the distribution of revenue among the federal, state, and local governments.
The confirmation followed the presentation and consideration of a report by the Senate Committee on National Planning and Economic Affairs during Tuesday’s plenary session at the National Assembly in Abuja.
Those confirmed include Bello Abubakar Wammako (Sokoto), Hadizatu Uwani Mustapha (Borno), Senator Marafa Bashir Abba (Taraba), Ahmed Waziri Hassan (Adamawa), Bob Helen Inafa (Bayelsa), and Gboyega Oladele (Osun).
Presenting the committee’s report, its chairman said the nominees were screened in accordance with constitutional provisions and were found competent and qualified to serve.
“The nominees have been duly vetted, and their appointments reflect regional balance and professional diversity,” the report noted.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, while announcing the confirmation, urged the new commissioners to uphold integrity and transparency in managing the nation’s fiscal affairs.
“The RMAFC is key to ensuring fair and equitable distribution of national revenue,” Akpabio said. “We expect the new appointees to bring professionalism, discipline, and innovation to their roles.”
The RMAFC, established by the 1999 Constitution, advises governments on fiscal efficiency, monitors accruals into the Federation Account, and determines the remuneration of political and public office holders.
Political observers say the confirmation of new commissioners could inject renewed energy into the Commission’s work, particularly as Nigeria grapples with fiscal challenges, declining revenues, and debates over equitable resource allocation.
With their confirmation, the six commissioners are expected to resume immediately and contribute to reforms aimed at promoting transparency and accountability in revenue distribution across all tiers of government.
