Security operatives on Monday fired tear gas to disperse protesters in Abuja calling for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The demonstrators, led by activist Omoyele Sowore, took to the streets despite a court injunction and warnings from the police. They chanted slogans such as, “Free Nnamdi Kanu now,” “It’s our constitutional right to protest,” and “Don’t tear gas us,” before officers opened fire with tear gas canisters.
As the chaos unfolded, some protesters shouted, “Tear gas cannot stop us,” while fleeing the scene.
The #FreeNnamdiKanuNow demonstration began near the Transcorp Hilton and spread across parts of the Federal Capital Territory.
