The newly appointed Assistant Coach of Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC), Akin Olowokere, has died after collapsing during a Monday morning training session in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Eyewitnesses at the 3SC training ground told Observers Times that the incident occurred during the team’s morning drills. According to one source, “He slumped on the pitch during the session and was rushed to the hospital. He was, however, confirmed dead on arrival.”
As of press time, the cause of death had not been officially disclosed. Club officials have yet to release a statement, but team members and supporters have expressed shock over the sudden loss.
Olokokere, a former player of Sunshine Stars of Akure, was recently unveiled as part of the Oluyole Warriors’ new technical crew following the departure of former head coach Gbenga Ogunbote and his staff. Known for his calm demeanour and tactical knowledge, he had previously worked as an assistant coach under Edith Agoye at Sunshine Stars.
Sports analysts say his passing is a significant blow to the club’s preparations for the coming season. “Olowokere was respected both as a player and a coach. His death will leave a vacuum not only in Shooting Stars but also in Nigerian football,” a veteran sports journalist in Ibadan remarked.
Olokokere’s playing career spanned several years with Sunshine Stars before transitioning into coaching, where he was regarded as a mentor to younger players.
