The Director-General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Philip Shaibu, has extended heartfelt congratulations to Nigeria’s Super Falcons following their emphatic 5-0 victory over Zambia at the ongoing 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The thumping win, recorded on Friday night in Casablanca, sealed Nigeria’s place in the tournament’s semi-finals, bringing them closer to reclaiming their continental dominance.
In a statement released by his Special Assistant on Media, Mr Ben Ogbemudia, and made available to journalists in Abuja, Shaibu lauded the Nigerian ladies for what he described as a “five-star performance”.
“I was so excited watching our girls in action. It was a devastating show of strength and experience,” he said. “That match was not just a win, it was a warning shot to the rest of the continent and a harsh lesson for a Zambian team that looked promising until they ran into Nigeria.”
Shaibu highlighted the urgency with which the Falcons approached the match, noting that the tone was set early by centre-back Osinachi Ohale, who headed in a brilliant free-kick from Esther Okoronkwo just 100 seconds into the game.
“Nigeria meant business from the blast of the whistle,” he added. “It was pure dominance and tactical excellence.”
He commended the players, coaching crew, and the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), urging them to remain focused as they prepare for the semi-final clash.
“As we move into the crucial stage of the tournament, I call on all Nigerians to remember the team, the technical crew, and the NFF leadership in their prayers,” Shaibu said. “Let’s support them before, during and after the final match in Morocco.”
The Super Falcons, nine-time WAFCON champions, remain favourites to lift the trophy once again as they look to extend their legacy on the continent.
