Nigeria’s Mining Marshals have arrested a senior police officer, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Abdulmajeed Abisoye Oyewumi, over allegations that he aided the escape of Chinese nationals facing prosecution for alleged illegal mining activities in Nasarawa State.
The arrest marks a significant development in the Federal Government’s ongoing crackdown on illegal mining and the enforcement of laws governing Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.
According to authorities, CSP Oyewumi is accused of facilitating the escape of the foreign nationals while they were standing trial over alleged violations of Nigeria’s mining regulations. Although officials have yet to disclose the full circumstances surrounding the incident, the officer is expected to face investigation as authorities intensify efforts to determine the extent of his alleged involvement.
The Mining Marshals, a specialised enforcement unit established to combat illegal mining and protect the country’s mineral resources, have in recent months stepped up operations against individuals and syndicates accused of undermining Nigeria’s mining industry.
The latest arrest underscores the government’s determination to hold accountable not only those accused of engaging in illegal mining but also any public officials suspected of obstructing justice or compromising ongoing investigations.
Authorities say further details will be made available as investigations continue.
