The Senate will hold a special session on Wednesday to honour the legacy of former President Muhammadu Buhari, focusing on his significant contributions to Nigeria’s national development following his recent passing.
The Senate has scheduled a commemorative session on Wednesday to pay tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on 13 July in London after a prolonged, undisclosed illness. The session will reflect on his enduring legacy and contributions to Nigeria’s progress. Last week, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) held a similar commemorative session in his honour. During the event, President Bola Tinubu praised Buhari’s leadership, noting that he governed with restraint, dignity, and an unwavering commitment to his responsibilities.
Buhari, born in Katsina, was laid to rest last week in Daura, Katsina State, in a ceremony attended by dignitaries from Nigeria and abroad. He was Nigeria’s second-longest-serving leader, having served as President from 2015 to 2023 and as Head of State from 1983 to 1985.
In a separate matter, the Senate has urged the public to dismiss unverified social media claims suggesting that the Senate Committee on Constitution Review recommended the creation of new states. Senate President Godswill Akpabio addressed these concerns following remarks by Senator Abdul Ningi regarding widespread misinformation. Akpabio clarified that while some communities have begun discussions about potential new states, no such proposals have been formally adopted. “I have reviewed over 42 proposals, but none have undergone full deliberation. The process for creating a new state is rigorous and has not been completed in any instance,” he stated. He advised the public to rely on official communications from the National Assembly for accurate information on constitutional matters.
