South Africa’s president, Cyril Ramaphosa, has called on foreign nationals residing in the country to uphold its laws and respect local customs, underscoring the importance of mutual respect.
“We say to those who are here legally, respect us as South Africans, respect our laws, conventions and our traditions, as you would want us to respect the laws and traditions of your own country,” Ramaphosa said.
His remarks come amid ongoing national conversations around immigration, social cohesion and the responsibilities of both citizens and non-citizens within South Africa.
The president’s statement highlights a broader government stance emphasising lawful residence and adherence to national values, while also reinforcing expectations of reciprocity between South Africans and foreign communities.
Observers say the comments reflect growing sensitivities around migration and identity, as authorities continue to balance inclusivity with the enforcement of domestic laws.
