The House of Representatives has called for an immediate suspension of the recently proposed tax law reforms, pending a thorough investigation into their implementation and potential impacts.
During plenary on Monday, lawmakers expressed concerns that the reforms, if implemented without proper scrutiny, could negatively affect businesses and ordinary Nigerians. The motion, spearheaded by several key members, highlighted the need for transparency and public consultation before any changes are enforced.
“The House urges a temporary halt on the tax law reforms to allow a full investigation into their provisions, implications, and the process by which they were developed,” the motion read.
The call comes amid growing criticism from civil society groups and economic stakeholders, who argue that the reforms may disproportionately burden small businesses and low-income earners. Lawmakers stressed the importance of ensuring that any adjustments to the tax framework are fair, equitable, and in line with national economic interests.
The House has directed its relevant committees to conduct a comprehensive review and report their findings within a stipulated timeframe, after which a decision on whether to proceed with the reforms will be made.
The Federal Government is yet to issue an official response to the House’s directive.
