Jayden Meghoma, the 19-year-old defender on loan from Premier League side Brentford, has hailed Rangers manager Russell Martin as pivotal in his decision to join the Scottish club this summer.

Speaking before Rangers’ clash with St. Mirren, Meghoma told the club’s official outlet, “He was the most influential part of [my move] because he was the one who gave me my debut. He knows how I play because I’ve played with him for a long time. He’s one of the biggest parts as to why I’m here.”

Making his debut in the UEFA Champions League playoff against Club Brugge on August 19, Meghoma impressed supporters by providing the assist for Danilo’s second-half goal, despite Rangers falling short.

Addressing concerns about his swift integration, Meghoma said, “I knew that I was playing from the start. A lot of people were saying I was thrown into the deep end, but it wasn’t that. I was always excited to come here and play football.”

He emphasised that his previous relationship with Martin from their time at Southampton eased his adaptation: “It was quite quick in terms of that, and the transition happened within days. I was ready to play because of my pre-season which was the most important part.”

Looking ahead, Meghoma remains focused on Rangers’ upcoming fixtures, stating, “For us, we’re always focusing on the next game. Club Brugge is the second game and St. Mirren is next, so that’s where our full focus lies.”

After a successful loan season at Preston North End, Meghoma aims to further develop at Ibrox and secure a future first-team role with Brentford.
