Political Nomad’: Presidency Mocks Peter Obi Following ADC Exit

The Presidency on Sunday slammed the former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, describing him as a “political nomad” following his reported departure from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, dismissed Obi’s reasons for leaving the party, characterizing them as “self-serving” and “illogical.”

Obi, who joined the ADC earlier this year, announced his exit citing a “toxic political climate” and worsening internal crises. In a statement shared via his X handle, the former Anambra State governor clarified that his departure was not due to personal grievances with party leaders, including former Senate President David Mark or former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

“The same Nigerian state and its agents that created unnecessary crises and hostility within the Labour Party… now appear to be finding their way into the ADC,” Obi stated, alleging that the party had become distracted by internal battles and court cases.

However, Onanuga urged Nigerians to ignore Obi’s explanation, accusing him of fleeing a potential primary contest against figures like Atiku Abubakar and former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi.

“The political nomad is on the move again,” Onanuga wrote. “Ignore all those puerile reasons… Peter Obi is a politician made of jelly, an opportunistic fellow. He can’t fight Atiku or Amaechi for the ticket of ADC. He pursues the easy road.”

The presidential aide further alleged that Obi’s refusal to undergo “soul-searching” would lead to a repeat of his 2023 defeat, adding, “Welcome, Peter, to the 2027 race.”
