Former Governor of Benue State, Senator Gabriel Suswam, has warned that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) could face extinction before the 2027 elections if its leadership fails to address the ongoing internal crises that have plagued the party.
Currently, the PDP is grappling with a leadership dispute over the national secretary position, as well as tensions between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara.
Speaking on Arise Television’s ‘The Morning Show’ on Tuesday, Senator Suswam likened the party’s current state to being in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), emphasizing that without immediate and effective intervention, it may not survive.
“A lot of people are hanging on, waiting to see the ultimate end of this party,” he said. “Whether there is light at the end of the tunnel will depend on the efforts made by Senator Bukola Saraki and other PDP governors in the coming weeks. For now, I would say that the PDP is in the hospital. Is it in the ICU? Yes, to some extent. Can it be rescued? Yes, if the proper medicine is applied.”
Suswam underscored that the party’s situation reflects a precarious 50-50 chance of survival. He cautioned that if the Saraki-led initiative fails, the PDP may cease to exist, leaving its members disillusioned and questioning the party’s future.
