Former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola has challenged the widespread belief that Nigerian state governors receive and spend public funds under a so-called “security vote” arrangement.
Speaking on the issue, Fashola dismissed the notion that such funds existed during his tenure, stating: “I was the governor. There was no security vote.”
His remarks directly contradict long-standing public perceptions that governors have access to discretionary security funds with little or no public accountability.
The former governor’s comments are expected to reignite debate over the financing of security operations in Nigeria and calls for greater transparency in the management of public funds, particularly amid growing demands for accountability in government spending.
