Former presidential spokesperson and actor Kenneth Okonkwo has disclosed details of discussions surrounding the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, saying a key political figure argued that the South-East’s strongest route to national power lies in forging strategic alliances with Northern political blocs.
Speaking on the coalition’s formation, Okonkwo said Senator Victor Umeh told him that the Igbo people’s best opportunity to secure the presidency would be through cooperation with the North, with Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi potentially serving as Vice President to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
“When we were all joining the ADC, Victor Umeh spoke to me and made it clear that the only chance the Igbo people have is to work with the North, and for our brother, Peter Obi, to become Vice President to Atiku Abubakar,” Okonkwo said.
The remarks are likely to reignite debate over opposition coalition-building ahead of future elections, particularly discussions surrounding power-sharing arrangements and the political aspirations of the South-East region.
