•Support for a Southwest Candidate
••leveled accusations of bad governance against Governor Dapo Abiodun
The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its gubernatorial candidate in the last election, Ladi Adebutu, have endorsed President Bola Tinubu as their candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
The endorsement was announced on Monday by the party’s state chairman, Abayomi Tella, in Sagamu during the official campaign flag-off of the PDP for the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North federal constituency bye-election. The National Vice Chairman of PDP, Engr Kamorudeen Ajisafe, presented the party’s flag to the candidate, Bolarinwa Oluwole, who is seeking to replace the late occupant of the seat, Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, who passed away in January.
Support for a Southwest Candidate
Addressing the gathering, Tella explained that the Ogun PDP adopted Tinubu as its candidate because of his Southwest origin. “We will support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Though he is in the opposition, let us support our own from the Southwest. Our support is for Tinubu, and we will stand by him. We are ready to give him our votes. The whole of the Southwest will give him our votes,” Tella stated.
He added, “We are going to support him. We will give him our votes. All we want in that election is fairness and just.”
Adebutu Criticizes Ogun State Government
Speaking at the event, Adebutu affirmed that the Ogun PDP has no grudge with Tinubu or his candidacy. However, he leveled accusations of bad governance against Governor Dapo Abiodun and vowed that the PDP would challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state in 2027.
“I was with the President in January and I told him that we have no issue with his leadership and candidacy,” Adebutu said. “We, however, have issue with bad governance in Ogun state, that is why we must have this platform to challenge bad governance.”
Adebutu emphasized the importance of winning the upcoming bye-election as a platform to challenge the state’s governance. He noted that the PDP won 34 out of 35 wards in the federal constituency during the previous election, claiming the APC-led government has lost public goodwill.
Call for Peaceful Election
Oluwole, the party’s candidate, urged Governor Dapo Abiodun to ensure a peaceful election devoid of any electoral malpractices as 55-man campaign committee has been formed, with Hon Damilare Bello as its chairman and Arc Kayode Adebayo serving as the Director General.
