the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State has suspended Senator Gbenga Daniel, the former governor representing Ogun East, for a string of alleged anti-party activities spanning the 2023 general elections and the recent Remo House of Representatives by-election.

The decision, ratified by the State Working Committee (SWC) at a meeting chaired by Chief Yemi Sanusi last week, follows Daniel’s reported snub of the party’s campaign efforts, even as APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, spearheaded the push in Ogun.

Sources reveal Daniel instructed supporters to replicate their voting pattern from the March 18, 2023, governorship election—where he allegedly rallied backing for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Hon Kessington Adebutu, now facing trial for vote-buying and criminal conspiracy—during the August 17 by-election. This brazen act, insiders claim, was part of a deal struck with Adebutu’s camp.

The APC leadership is said to be incensed, noting that Daniel, despite enjoying significant party privileges, consistently undermined its interests, save for his own senatorial campaign. Further fuelling their ire, Daniel and his allies allegedly issued threats to Ward 4 leaders in Sagamu after he was summoned to address these accusations.

The suspension casts a shadow over Daniel’s political manoeuvrings. It’s understood that traditional rulers, including the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba (Dr) Sikiru Adetona, had persuaded Governor Dapo Abiodun to support Daniel’s senatorial bid, convincing incumbent Senator Lekan Mustapha to step aside.

Yet, after securing the ticket, Daniel reportedly turned on Abiodun, scheming to derail the governor’s re-election to bolster his own 2027 Ogun East candidacy, as both hail from the same district.
