Former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has condemned the reported blockade of the convoy of Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi during his visit to the state.
Mr Ortom described the incident as unacceptable and alleged that the state government, led by Governor Hyacinth Alia, should be held responsible for the disruption.
The former governor said political differences should not be allowed to undermine the freedom of movement or peaceful engagement of political leaders and their supporters.
Mr Obi was reportedly in Benue as part of his political engagements when his convoy encountered the incident, which has sparked reactions across the political divide.
Mr Ortom’s comments are expected to intensify the debate over political tolerance and the conduct of political activities in Benue ahead of the 2027 general election.
The former governor urged authorities to ensure that political actors are allowed to move freely and conduct their activities without intimidation or obstruction.
The development has also generated criticism among supporters of Mr Obi, who have called for an explanation over the circumstances surrounding the reported blockade.
