Former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), has called on Northern leaders to urgently revive the region’s core values of humility, unity and selfless service, warning that the North is drifting under the weight of mounting insecurity and deepening socio-economic challenges.
In a strongly worded message on Monday, Babangida expressed concern that the region, once known for its cohesion and moral strength, is now grappling with crises that threaten its long-term stability and development. He cautioned that without a collective return to foundational principles, the North risks losing its strategic place in Nigeria’s political and economic landscape.
According to the elder statesman, the erosion of traditional values has contributed significantly to rising insecurity, poverty and disunity across many northern communities. He stressed that leaders at all levels must rise above personal interests, demonstrate integrity and recommit themselves to the wellbeing of the people.
Babangida further urged stakeholders, including political leaders, traditional institutions and youth groups, to work together in restoring peace and building structures that can support sustainable development.
He emphasised that the North’s strength has always stemmed from its unity and sense of purpose, urging today’s leaders to emulate the selflessness of past generations who prioritised service above ambition.
The former president also called for renewed investment in education, security and economic empowerment to address the root causes of the region’s challenges.
Babangida’s remarks come amid ongoing public debates about the future of the North and the need for reforms capable of reversing years of decline.
He maintained that only a united and value-driven leadership can steer the region towards stability, progress and national relevance.
