Nollywood actress Doris Ogala has formally demanded one billion naira in aggravated damages from Lagos-based cleric Pastor Chris Okafor, founder of Grace Nation Liberation City, over an alleged breach of promise to marry. In a legal demand letter dated December 16, 2025, delivered by her lawyers at Synergy Law Partners, the actress has given the pastor 21 days to comply or face a lawsuit, setting the stage for a dramatic legal and social confrontation.

The demand letter, addressed to Pastor Okafor at his Ojodu Berger church address, outlines a series of allegations stemming from a relationship that the actress claims began in 2017. According to her lawyers, Ogala was undergoing emotional distress and sought pastoral support when the cleric initiated a personal relationship, culminating in a “clear, consistent and unequivocal” promise of marriage. This promise, they argue, was reinforced by conduct, including introductions to the pastor’s family and joint appearances at family functions.

Ogala alleges she relied on this promise to her detriment, taking what her legal team terms “irreversible steps.” Central to her claim is the assertion that she exited a troubled marriage, foregoing any chance of reconciliation, based on the security of the promised union with Pastor Okafor. Furthermore, the letter alleges significant financial entanglement, stating that the actress entrusted the cleric with a sum of N45 million in a single transaction, granting him access to her finances based on the relationship and anticipated marriage.

The situation reached a crisis point, the letter claims, when Pastor Chris Okafor publicly announced his engagement to another woman. Her lawyers describe this act as a blatant repudiation of his promise, one that has caused their client “severe emotional and reputational harm.” They note that Ogala, a public figure and member of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, has since endured intense public scrutiny, online harassment, and victim-shaming as a direct result. The letter also accuses the pastor of responsibility for the alleged unauthorised circulation of private photographs.

In Nigerian legal context, a breach of promise to marry is a recognised cause of action under the common law, though it is often complex to litigate. Success typically requires proof of a clear promise, reasonable reliance on that promise, and tangible detriment suffered as a result. Legal experts note that while courts are generally reluctant to force matrimony, they may award damages for financial loss, emotional distress, and reputational injury proven to flow from the breach. The Matrimonial Causes Act does not govern such promises, making it a matter for civil law under tort or contract principles.

“While marriage cannot be forced, the law provides remedies for breach of promise and aggravated harm,” the letter from Synergy Law Partners states. They are seeking N1 billion as general and aggravated damages, citing the public nature of the alleged breach, the reputational injury, and the emotional distress inflicted on their client.

As of the time of reporting, Pastor Chris Okafor and his legal representatives have not issued a public response to the allegations or the demand letter.
