The Federal Government has assured that it will take responsibility for the welfare of families of individuals accused of plotting a coup, emphasising that relatives must not suffer for offences they did not commit.
The Minister of Defence gave the assurance while addressing concerns over the arrest and prosecution of suspected coupists, stressing that the government’s actions are guided by the rule of law and respect for human rights.
According to the minister, while the state will deal decisively with any threat to national security, it recognises the need to protect innocent family members from undue hardship arising from the alleged actions of their relatives.
He noted that arrangements would be made to ensure that families affected by the investigations receive necessary support, adding that collective punishment has no place in a democratic society.
The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s constitutional order, warning that any attempt to undermine democracy would be met with firm but lawful measures.
He also urged the public to remain calm, assuring citizens that security agencies are acting professionally and in line with established legal procedures.
