Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Christopher Musa, has revealed that the military leadership played a direct role in uncovering and reporting a recent coup plot, describing the suspects as inexperienced junior officers who “did not know their left from their right”.

Speaking on the failed attempt, Musa said he personally convened the committee that investigated the alleged plot, stressing that the move was part of ongoing efforts to reinforce democratic values within the armed forces.

“We were the ones who actually identified and reported the coup. I was the one who convened the committee that carried out the investigation,” the minister said.

Musa added that the military was using the incident to educate younger officers on the dangers of unconstitutional power grabs, insisting that democracy remains superior to military rule.

“What we’re trying to do now is to show the junior ones that coups don’t pay. Democracy is far better than any military regime,” he stated.

The defence minister further described the suspects as a “bunch of confused individuals”, saying they were largely junior officials with little understanding of the implications of their actions.

Security agencies have since arrested several suspects linked to the alleged plot, though authorities are yet to release full details of the investigation.
