•••Minister Confirms Increase, Says Balance Must Be Struck Between Consumers and Operators

  • Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigerian telecommunications sector is on the verge of a major upheaval as the government prepares to approve a significant tariff increase, sparking widespread outrage among consumers. While telecom operators argue that rising operational costs necessitate the hike, subscribers and industry experts have raised concerns, accusing operators of seeking to exploit consumers.
    Minister Confirms Increase, Seeks Balance
Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, recently confirmed that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) would soon approve new tariffs, following a meeting with Mobile Network Operators. Tijani emphasized the need to strike a balance between protecting consumers and ensuring the sustainability of the telecom industry.
Operators Cite Rising Costs, Warn of Collapse
Telecom operators, including MTN Nigeria and others, have been vocal about the need for a tariff increase, citing rising operational costs driven by inflation, foreign exchange fluctuations, and increased energy prices. They argue that the current pricing structure is no longer sustainable, threatening the industry’s long-term viability.
    ALTON Warns of Service Disruptions
The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has issued a stark warning, stating that the sector is on the brink of collapse if urgent reforms are not implemented. ALTON Chairman, Engr. Gbenga Adebayo, warned of potential service disruptions, including service shedding and limited service availability, if the industry’s financial challenges are not addressed.
    Consumers Cry Foul, Demand Alternatives
The National Association of Telecoms Subscribers (NATCOMS) has vehemently rejected the planned hike, describing it as an “unbearable burden” for Nigerian consumers. NATCOMS President, Chief Deolu Ogunbanjo, argued that the increase would disproportionately affect low-income subscribers and urged the government to explore alternative solutions, such as capital market funding, to address the financial needs of telecom operators.
    Consumers Express Concerns
Many Nigerians have expressed concerns about the proposed tariff increase, citing the already high cost of living and the potential impact on their livelihoods. Some have accused telecom operators of “extortion,” citing issues with data usage and service quality.
    Financial Experts Suggest Alternatives
Financial experts have suggested alternative funding mechanisms, such as Initial Public Offerings (IPOs), as a more sustainable solution for telecom operators to raise capital without burdening consumers. They point to the successful IPO of MTN Nigeria as a model for other operators to consider.
The proposed tariff increase has ignited a heated debate, with consumers, operators, and regulators grappling with the challenges facing the Nigerian telecommunications sector. As the NCC prepares to announce the final decision, the outcome will have significant implications for millions of Nigerians.
