A Kaduna-based activist has condemned remarks attributed to Islamic cleric Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir in which he reportedly referred to non-Muslims as “infidels”.
The activist described the comments as inappropriate and contrary to the principles of Islam, urging religious leaders to promote peace, tolerance and peaceful coexistence in Nigeria.
Sheikh Jingir, a prominent Islamic scholar and leader associated with the Izala movement, has attracted public attention following comments in a widely circulated video concerning Nigeria’s religious and political affairs.
The remarks have sparked debate on social media, with critics arguing that describing fellow citizens on the basis of their religious beliefs in such terms could deepen existing religious divisions.
The Kaduna activist said religious differences should not be used to create hostility between Nigerians, stressing that Muslims and Christians have a shared responsibility to maintain peace and protect the country’s unity.
He also called on Islamic scholars and other religious leaders to be mindful of the influence their public statements can have, particularly in a country where religious and ethnic tensions have occasionally contributed to violence.
The controversy comes amid renewed discussions about the role of religion in Nigerian politics and the need for political and religious leaders to promote inclusivity.
Sheikh Jingir has previously been known for his strong views on Islamic affairs and has been a prominent voice within northern Nigeria’s Islamic community. He has also been associated with the Izala movement, one of the country’s major Islamic reform organisations
