The Federal Government says it has formally approached the Republic of Turkey for strategic assistance in tackling Nigeria’s persistent security challenges.
This was disclosed on Friday by a senior government official, who said the move forms part of President Bola Tinubu’s broader diplomatic initiatives aimed at strengthening international partnerships against terrorism, banditry, and organised crime.
According to the official, discussions with Turkish authorities focus on enhanced defence cooperation, intelligence sharing, counter-terrorism training, and the procurement of advanced security equipment.
“The Federal Government has opened high-level engagements with Turkey to support Nigeria’s security architecture. Our aim is to leverage their experience, technology, and military capabilities to reinforce our ongoing operations across the country,” the official stated.
Turkey, a key NATO member with a growing defence industry, has in recent years expanded its security collaboration with several African nations. Nigeria’s outreach signals a renewed push to modernise its counter-insurgency strategy and strengthen regional stability.
The government reaffirmed that the partnership will strictly adhere to international protocols and Nigeria’s national security priorities.
More details are expected as both countries advance discussions in the coming weeks.
