Nigeria’s Federal Government has announced a ban on the use of motorcycles and tricycles along the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, citing safety concerns and the need to preserve the integrity of the newly constructed transport corridor.
The directive prohibits commercial and private motorcycles, popularly known as okada, as well as tricycles (keke), from operating on the highway with immediate effect. Authorities say the measure is aimed at reducing accidents, improving traffic flow and ensuring the highway functions as a high-speed route for long-distance travel.
Government officials urged motorists and commuters to comply with the new regulations, warning that security agencies and traffic enforcement officers will strictly enforce the ban.
The Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway is one of Nigeria’s flagship infrastructure projects, designed to enhance connectivity, boost economic activity and improve transportation across the country’s southern coastline.
