A coordinated attack on a police convoy linked to former Anambra State Governor and Minister of Labour, Sen. Chris Ngige, occurred earlier today along the Nkpor–Nnobi Road in Idemili North Local Government Area.
Although Sen. Ngige was not present in the convoy at the time of the incident, the assailants opened fire on the security detail, resulting in one police operative sustaining a gunshot injury. The officer is currently in stable condition and receiving medical treatment.
The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the recovery of a white Mercedes-Benz SUV that was seized during the attack. According to SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer, the vehicle was abandoned by the armed suspects following a fierce gun battle with a combined team of tactical police units.
The operation involved personnel from the Awka Operations Department, the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) based in Akwuzu, and the Special Anti-Cultism Unit (SPACS) from Enugu-Ukwu. The joint team was already in pursuit of criminals who had earlier attacked a police patrol at Eziowelle when they encountered the convoy, which promptly joined the engagement.
SP Ikenga stated that the assailants fled the scene under intense pressure, leaving behind the stolen vehicle, which has now been taken into police custody for forensic analysis.
A manhunt is currently underway across the state to apprehend the suspects. The police have assured the public that updates will be provided as the situation develops.
