Nigeria’s fragile power infrastructure suffered another major setback on Tuesday as the national electricity grid collapsed once again, triggering widespread blackouts across several parts of the country.

Power distribution companies confirmed the outage, attributing it to a system disturbance on the national grid, which led to a sudden loss of supply. The incident marks the latest in a series of grid collapses that have continued to undermine electricity supply, economic productivity and public confidence in the sector.

Although restoration efforts commenced shortly after the collapse, many homes and businesses were left without power for hours, forcing increased reliance on generators and alternative energy sources. Industrial operators warned that repeated grid failures are driving up operating costs and discouraging investment, particularly in manufacturing and small-scale enterprises.

Energy experts have long blamed the recurring collapses on ageing transmission infrastructure, poor maintenance, inadequate generation capacity and weak coordination among sector operators. Despite repeated assurances from authorities that reforms and upgrades are underway, the national grid remains highly unstable.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has yet to issue a detailed explanation on the immediate cause of the latest failure, but sector stakeholders are calling for urgent and sustained investment in transmission networks, grid management systems and renewable alternatives to reduce pressure on the central grid.

As Nigerians grapple with yet another blackout, concerns are mounting that without decisive action, grid collapses may remain a recurring feature of the country’s power sector rather than an exception.
