The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs has called on Nigerians to reject divisive tendencies and embrace unity as Muslims across the country mark the Islamic New Year, 1448 AH.

The council, under the leadership of the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the NSCIA, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, said the nation’s challenges could only be overcome through collective efforts, mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence.

In a statement signed by its Public Affairs Officer, Abbas Jimoh, and made available to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, the council congratulated Muslims on the commencement of the new Islamic calendar and urged them to reflect on the lessons of the Hijrah.

The NSCIA said the declaration of Muharram followed the successful verification of moon sightings by the National Moon Sighting Committees across the country.

According to the council, the migration of Prophet Muhammad symbolises faith, sacrifice, resilience, perseverance and unwavering trust in Allah, values it said remain relevant to Nigeria’s current realities.

The council expressed concern over the country’s security and economic challenges, noting that many Nigerians continue to grapple with fear, hardship and uncertainty.

It lamented the persistent threats posed by banditry, insurgency and kidnapping across various parts of the country, describing the situation as a serious national concern.

The NSCIA particularly decried recent abductions involving pupils and teachers, stressing that the protection of lives and property must remain a top priority for government at all levels.

On the economy, the council acknowledged the difficulties facing citizens, including rising living costs, food inflation and unemployment.

While recognising ongoing government reforms, it urged authorities to ensure that economic policies are complemented by effective palliative measures and programmes targeted at vulnerable groups.

The council, however, warned against attempts to exploit ethnic, religious or political differences for selfish interests.

“We call on all Nigerians, regardless of faith or ethnicity, to reject narratives that seek to divide us. The threats facing Nigeria are blind to religion and other differences. Our solutions to the challenges must be united,” the statement said.

The NSCIA urged religious leaders, traditional rulers and community stakeholders to promote tolerance, dialogue and mutual respect in order to strengthen national cohesion.

It also called on political leaders to place national interest above partisan considerations and demonstrate integrity, accountability and commitment to good governance.

The council maintained that sustainable development could not thrive in an atmosphere of fear and insecurity, adding that justice and accountability remained essential in addressing the root causes of insurgency and criminality.

As Muslims celebrate the beginning of the Hijrah New Year, the NSCIA encouraged increased prayers, charity and acts of kindness while praying for lasting peace, security and prosperity in Nigeria.

The council wished Muslims a peaceful, rewarding and spiritually fulfilling Hijrah 1448 AH.
