Manchester City capitalized on Arsenal’s stumble, closing the gap at the top of the Premier League table with a dominant 3-0 win over Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium on December 6, 2025. The victory sees City just two points behind the league leaders, reigniting the title race in the process.

In a match where Erling Haaland was unusually quiet, Manchester City’s defense stepped up to the plate. Ruben Dias opened the scoring with a powerful long-range effort, showcasing his ability beyond just defensive duties. Josko Gvardiol added a second goal before halftime with a well-placed header, securing City’s lead going into the break.

The second half saw Phil Foden continue his impressive recent form, scoring for the fifth time in three games to complete the rout. The win not only boosts City’s title hopes but also highlights their depth and versatility, even when their star striker is off the mark.

Meanwhile, Chelsea’s title aspirations appear to be slipping away. Despite Cole Palmer’s return to the starting lineup for the first time since September, the Blues were held to a goalless draw at Bournemouth. This result leaves Chelsea eight points adrift of the top spot and in fourth place, with their title challenge looking increasingly unlikely.

Tottenham provided some relief for manager Thomas Frank with their first home league win since the opening day of the season. A 2-0 victory over Brentford, Frank’s former club, saw goals from Richarlison and Xavi Simons. This win moves Spurs back into the top half of the table and eases some of the pressure on Frank.

Newcastle continued their steady climb up the table with a 2-1 win over 10-man Burnley. Bruno Guimaraes scored a stunning opener directly from a corner, and Anthony Gordon added a second from the penalty spot after Lucas Pires was sent off for Burnley. This victory sees Newcastle rise to 10th place, highlighting their consistent improvement this season.

Sean Dyche’s return to Everton as Nottingham Forest boss ended in disappointment, with Forest suffering a 3-0 defeat. Nikola Milenkovic’s own goal, Thierno Barry’s first Everton goal, and a late strike from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall saw Everton climb to fifth place, while Forest’s title hopes took another blow.

Liverpool will look to arrest their slide down the table when they travel to Leeds later. Leeds’ recent 3-1 victory over Chelsea saw them climb out of the relegation zone, making this an important match for both teams.
