Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, will on Friday, August 29, 2025, begin a month-long vacation, during which his deputy, Barrister Bayo Lawal, will step in as Acting Governor.
This was confirmed in a letter sent to the House of Assembly and read during plenary on Tuesday by the Speaker, Adebo Ogundoyin. The governor’s notice was in line with Section 190(1) of the Nigerian Constitution, which requires a state governor to formally notify the legislature before proceeding on leave.
In the letter, Makinde stated that Lawal would assume full responsibilities of the office from August 29 until his return on Monday, September 29.
“I hereby transmit that during the period indicated above, the Deputy Governor, Barrister Bayo Lawal, shall serve as Acting Governor. I shall resume duty upon my return from vacation on Monday, 29th September 2025,” the governor’s letter read in part.
The Speaker acknowledged receipt of the letter and assured that the Assembly would support a smooth handover of responsibilities in the governor’s absence. He also reaffirmed the commitment of the House to constitutional order and continuity of governance in the state.
With the Assembly’s affirmation, Lawal will formally take over as Acting Governor from Friday. The House of Assembly is expected to resume plenary on September 16, 2025, while Governor Makinde is billed to resume office on September 29.
