The Benue State House of Assembly has suspended its former Speaker, Aondona Dajoh, for three months over an alleged attempt to impeach Governor Hyacinth Alia.
Dajoh’s suspension was announced on Tuesday during plenary after a motion moved by the member representing Kyan Constituency, Terna Shimawua, and seconded by James Umoru of Apa Constituency.
Shimawua, who raised the motion, was among lawmakers suspended last Friday by Dajoh shortly before his resignation as Speaker.
Ruling on the motion, the current Speaker, Alfred Berger, reviewed the suspension period from six months to three months. The decision was taken without a formal vote, which is usually required for such disciplinary actions.
The Assembly leadership accused Dajoh of plotting against Governor Alia through moves to instigate impeachment, a development that escalated tensions within the chamber.
