Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde has declared his confidence in his ability to serve as Nigeria’s president, but emphasized the immediate need to strengthen the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Speaking on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” on Tuesday, Makinde, currently serving his second term as Oyo governor, asserted his leadership capabilities.
“I don’t have any doubt that I have the capacity to occupy the highest office in this land, and I have what it takes,” he stated. However, he stressed that the 2027 presidential election will be a contest between Nigerians and the All Progressives Congress (APC), rather than a traditional party-versus-party battle.
“Where we are right now is that we must fix our party; we must have a platform for you to even aspire to be anything,” Makinde added, highlighting the PDP’s internal challenges.
He also expressed contentment with his current political achievements, stating, “If my political journey ends right here, I am also very happy. When I joined politics in 2007, I wanted to go to the senate… but now, not only have I achieved more than that by being governor of my state, I have also cherished the opportunity that people have given to me to make my own little difference.”
Makinde’s comments signal his potential future ambitions, while simultaneously addressing the PDP’s need for internal reform.
