••Ex-Governor warns against misuse of state power, predicting political fallout.
By John Audu.
Former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has issued a stark warning to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, cautioning against the alleged misuse of state institutions to undermine opposition parties. Lamido asserts that such tactics, employed in preparation for Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid, pose a grave threat to both the president and Nigeria’s democratic fabric.
Speaking exclusively to Tribune Online after his election as a PDP national delegate, Lamido expressed deep concern over the reported actions of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Tinubu. He accused them of using government bodies like INEC, the Police, DSS, and EFCC to “threaten, harass, and weaken” opposition parties.
“If you look at the way people are trooping out of PDP, it is very, very obnoxious and poses a threat to the country,” Lamido stated. “The country and democracy are in serious danger because, by destroying opposition using state institutions… you are not only destroying your opposition but also yourself.”
As a founding member of the PDP and a member of its Board of Trustees, Lamido emphasized the fundamental role of opposition in a democracy. “The foundation of democracy is built on freedom, liberty, and opposition,” he declared. “Tinubu, in his wisdom, believes that by destroying opposition political parties like PDP, he is enhancing his political fortune. Unfortunately, he is being too clever by half because destroying PDP as a political party means Nigeria itself would be destroyed, and everything will collapse on him.”
Lamido remained optimistic about the return of those who have left the PDP, predicting a reversal of allegiances within months. “Just wait for five or six months, and by the end of this year, you will see. Tinubu is committing political suicide. Those who are joining him are also committing political suicide. They are on a mission with the president, but by the end of their journey, they will come back.”
Lamido’s warning comes amidst growing concerns about the political climate in Nigeria, with allegations of state-sponsored intimidation and manipulation swirling around the Tinubu administration.
