Former Niger Delta militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, has made a passionate appeal to northern political leaders to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
In an interview with Arise Television, Tompolo, who recently publicly endorsed Tinubu for a second term, described the President as “a good person” with the experience necessary to elevate Nigeria. His appeal comes amidst reports of a growing coalition, spearheaded by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, aiming to challenge Tinubu’s hold on power in the upcoming election.
“We’ll do our part, even go out of our boundary to the northern part of Nigeria to talk to our brothers so that he will get his second tenure,” Tompolo stated. “Tinubu is a good person; he has the experience to bring this country to a higher level.”
Tompolo emphasized the principle of fairness, arguing that Tinubu should be afforded the same opportunity as his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, who served two full terms. “I am travelling across all the northern states to appeal to them. Buhari spent eight years now. So, we don’t want anybody to cause any problem. Let Tinubu have his eight years too and go, then we will look for another person,” he said. “There is no need for anybody to say we have a monopoly of power. We must allow Tinubu to do his eight years, we will appeal to everybody and by the grace of God everybody will support us.”
The former militant leader also reiterated that traditional rulers in Delta State have already thrown their weight behind Tinubu’s re-election. Tompolo’s intervention adds a significant voice to the ongoing political discourse, highlighting the growing tensions and alliances shaping the lead-up to the 2027 elections.
