Strong indications emerged on Tuesday that the former Governor of Kano State and 2023 New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, will formally join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Wednesday.

Sources within the ADC leadership disclosed that Kwankwaso is expected to register as a member of the party in his hometown, Kwankwaso, located in the Madobi Local Government Area of Kano State.

The move follows weeks of intense speculation fueled by Kwankwaso hosting high-profile political figures at his Kano residence. Notable visitors included the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde.

Governor Makinde, a key figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction led by Kabiru Turaki, SAN, is reportedly considering a similar move. The Turaki-led faction remains locked in a protracted leadership struggle with a rival camp loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike—a dispute that has resisted multiple reconciliation efforts.

As the ADC prepares for these high-profile entries, the party’s leadership on Tuesday received a comprehensive report from its Constitution Review Committee. The report was received by the National Legal Adviser, Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor, on behalf of the National Chairman, Senator David Mark.

In a speech delivered by Osunbor, Senator Mark stated that the constitutional review is a strategic move to ensure the party’s framework reflects current political realities. He emphasized the need to strengthen internal democracy, transparency, and accountability to meet the expectations of an expanding membership.

“I am particularly encouraged that this review process involved wide consultations across states, zones, and critical stakeholders,” Mark said. “This inclusive approach reinforces our belief that the ADC belongs to all its members, irrespective of status or position. The National Working Committee will study these recommendations with the utmost seriousness.”

The anticipated defection of Kwankwaso and the potential alignment of other aggrieved heavyweights signal a major shift in the political landscape as the ADC positions itself as a formidable “third force” ahead of future elections.
