Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signalling a significant political shift ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The move, confirmed on Tuesday, marks the end of Kingibe’s association with the Labour Party, under which platform she won the FCT senatorial seat in the 2023 polls. Her defection is widely seen as part of the early manoeuvring and realignments already shaping the build-up to the next election cycle.
Sources within the ADC confirmed that the senator has completed the necessary formalities to join the party, with party leaders welcoming her as a high-profile addition to their ranks. The development is expected to strengthen the ADC’s presence and visibility in the nation’s capital.
Although Senator Kingibe has yet to issue a detailed public statement explaining her decision, political observers say the move could reshape political calculations in the FCT, where party loyalties have remained fluid since the last general election.
The defection adds to a growing list of party switches by prominent politicians as parties reposition themselves for 2027, amid intensifying debates over governance, opposition strategy and coalition-building.
More details are expected to emerge in the coming days as the senator and her new party formally address the development.
