Celtic FC has confirmed the signing of Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho on a one-year contract, effective immediately after his contract with Sevilla was terminated. The transfer, which has taken place on a free transfer, includes an option for an additional year, subject to international clearance.
The 28-year-old marks his return to working under Brendan Rodgers, who was instrumental in Iheanacho’s most successful season at Leicester City. Under Rodgers, Iheanacho netted 19 goals during the 2020–21 season, which saw the Foxes lift the FA Cup. Speaking on the transfer, Celtic FC expressed their delight at securing the striker’s services, with an official club statement highlighting the potential for an additional year after the first.
Iheanacho began his professional journey at Manchester City, where he won the 2016 League Cup. His subsequent move to Leicester City saw him become a key figure, making over 200 appearances and lifting the FA Cup with the club in 2021. After a brief spell with Sevilla in 2024 and a loan to Middlesbrough, Iheanacho now returns to the Scottish Premiership, looking to make an impact at Celtic.
On the international front, Iheanacho boasts 58 caps for Nigeria. His most recent achievement with the national team was helping secure second place in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, further cementing his reputation as a key player for the Super Eagles.
This signing will surely be a welcomed addition to the Scottish side, as Celtic FC fans had expressed frustration over the club’s failure to sign a forward before the transfer deadline.
