The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a public notice declaring Christopher Enweremadu, former commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in Abia State, wanted for criminal conspiracy, public funds diversion, and money laundering.

According to a statement by EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, Enweremadu’s last known address is at the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in Umuahia, Abia State. The EFCC has urged the public to come forward with any information regarding Enweremadu’s whereabouts, offering to contact any of their zonal offices across the country.

“The public is hereby notified that CHRISTOPHER ENWEREMADU, whose photograph appears above, is wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in an alleged case of Criminal Conspiracy, Diversion of Public Funds, Stealing, and Money Laundering. Anybody with useful information as to his whereabouts should please contact the Commission in any of its offices across the country,” the notice stated.

Enweremadu, who served as commissioner under the administration of former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, has previously been connected to investigations regarding mismanagement of funds allocated to local government councils in Abia. In December 2024, a Federal Capital Territory High Court ordered a probe into the handling of funds by local governments in the state, covering the period from 2019 to 2023.

The court also ordered the seizure of travel documents belonging to Enweremadu and two other officials in connection with the investigation. The action stemmed from a complaint filed by an activist, who alleged that billions of naira allocated for local government areas were misappropriated under the watch of these officials.

EFCC has not disclosed further specifics regarding the transactions related to this new warrant for Enweremadu’s arrest. However, this latest move follows the Commission’s recent declaration of Abdullahi Bashir Haske, a known associate of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, wanted for similar charges.

The investigation continues as the EFCC intensifies its efforts to bring those implicated in the corruption scandal to justice.
