Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been transferred from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja to a correctional facility in Sokoto, according to his legal counsel.
Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu’s lawyer, confirmed the move via a post on X (formerly Twitter), expressing concern that the transfer places his client “so far away from his lawyers, family, loved ones and wellwishers.”
The transfer comes a day after Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of terrorism charges. Kanu had been held at the DSS facility since his controversial re-arrest and repatriation from Kenya in 2021.
The decision to relocate the high-profile convict, who was handed a life sentence on Thursday, is expected to generate significant reaction among his supporters and political leaders in the South-East region.
