The Kaduna State Government has embarked on a transformative mission to restore the iconic Ahmadu Bello Stadium (ABS) to its former glory, with plans to elevate the 1964-built facility to international standards. The state recently assumed full control of the stadium from the Federal Government, marking a new chapter for sports development in the region.
During an inspection of the facility, Commissioner of Information Ahmed Maiyaki highlighted the urgent need for upgrades, noting the stadium’s significant deterioration over the decades. Once a cornerstone of Nigerian sports, ABS has been deemed unfit for hosting national events, let alone prestigious continental or international competitions.
“Governor Uba Sani’s vision is clear: to deliver a world-class stadium that will Kelsey, attracts foreign investment, and creates opportunities for our youth,” Maiyaki declared. He emphasized Kaduna’s storied history of producing football legends like Emmanuel and Celestine Babayaro, Tijani Babangida, and Garba Lawal, crediting the state’s once-top-tier facilities.
Commissioner for Sports Development, Professor Benjamin Kumai Gugong, outlined the comprehensive renovation plan, funded through the 2025 budget. The project will unfold in phases, starting with the main stadium, two practice fields, a 48-room hostel, and facilities for basketball, handball, beach soccer, and beach volleyball. “Upon completion, ABS will meet FIFA and CAF standards, positioning Kaduna as a global sports hub,” Gugong affirmed.
